Club History

The Rochester Yacht Club is a private club that was founded one-hundred-thirty years ago. Our purpose is to provide and encourage interests and instruction in areas of yachts and yachting, seamanship, racing and traditions of yachting. By car, RYC is seven miles from the heart of Rochester, Monroe County, New York.  We are located on the south shore of Lake Ontario and are accessible from the Genesee River.  The club is twenty miles east of Brockport, thirty miles west of Sodus, and ninety miles southeast of Toronto.

Incorporated in 1877, our club celebrated its 125th Anniversary in 2002 and is still going strong. The First Regatta was held in 1877 with eight sail boats competing. By the time RYC joined the Lake Yacht Racing Association (LYRA) in 1887, the Club had 46 members and 15 boats. Five years later in 1892, membership had grown to 157 with a fleet of 29 sailboats and 7 Steam / Naphtha power boats. Membership had surged to 318 members by 1910. Our current resident membership is approximately 450 with over 250 members in various other categories.

The First Club House was formally opened in June 1877.  Our Newly Remodeled Club House was built on its present location in 1922.  Extensive renovations to the clubhouse were completed in 1996.  We are constantly striving to provide our members with the services and facilities they deserve.

Over the years, RYC has sponsored Local, National and International Level Regattas including Dinghy Racing, One-Design and Handicap Racing, Women's and Junior Racing, Sailing Instruction Programs and Club-Wide Sail and Power Boat Cruising. In a rich tradition, the Club celebrates the spirit of yachting and related activities in an atmosphere that fellow members enjoy.
