National Hospice Regatta held at the Rochester Yacht Club 2009

Commodore's Letter

August  2010

Dear Members,

I am very pleased to write the Commodore’s letter, as Betsey and Charlie Ross have been away cruising and exploring Lake Erie via the Erie Canal system. Susie and I were able to join them for the Brockport to Buffalo, then Erie, and Cleveland portion of their adventure. In addition to being really fun, it gave us a great opportunity to visit and learn and compare RYC to several other Great Lakes clubs.

Bill Delaney has reported that the official RYC Club Cruise to the western shores of Lake Ontario was successful and enjoyed by all those that participated. An equally enthusiastic group of RYC members headed across the lake for their Bay of Quinte unofficial annual cruise.

It is summer and youth sailing is blast reaching along. Jon Faudree and his instructor team are enjoying great attendance in our Youth Sailing Program. The kids are really enjoying the 6 new “Open Bic” dinghies – which have been provided by Rochester Community Boating. We still have some open slots in the weeks to come, so if you have kids, or nieces & nephews, or need a good excuse to get your grandkids to be here with you… please consider enrolling them. Contact jonf@rochesteryc.com . Also, Natalie Steo is chairing the USSA Junior Olympic Regatta in just a few weeks. Our RYC Race Team kids are traveling to several youth regattas, throughout the north east.

Congratulations to Phil Wherheim, Jim Barnash and Scott Napier as they have won the right to represent RYC in the 2010 NYYC Invitational Regatta in Newport, RI this September. I also want to thank the other 5 teams of members that stepped up to challenge, so that RYC could send a strong and proven team. No pressure though- you only have to be a top 3 team to win a berth for RYC in the “big” event.

Best wishes to all of our race teams that represent RYC in regattas. Recently, Rob Mendenhall chartered a Catalina 37 for Long Beach Race Week (CA) and finished in 3rd place flying the RYC Burgee. Ron Palm will be off soon with his 8 Metre - Mystery to compete in the 2010 IEMA World Championship in Toronto. RYC will be well represented in the Lake Ontario 300, Youngstown Level Regatta and LYRA at Buffalo Yacht Club. Good Luck to all. The Hospice Regatta and Rochester Race are coming up in a few weeks, so let’s rally our crews to get out and support these local events.

Membership Director Betsy Lawless has been busy with both member recruitment and retention activities. If you know of someone that has mentioned an interest in joining or learning more about our Club, please contact Betsy blawless@frontiernet.net . We have been working hard to develop a comfortable, no pressure process for candidates to become acquainted with our Club. By the way, all members are welcome to attend our “New” member socials. Their purpose is to help members meet other members and become more comfortable, sooner, when coming to the Club.

Congratulations to Peter & Megan Cucci who were already busy enough planning for the 2010 Melges 24 North American Championship, as they recently added another beautiful daughter to their family. About 60 boats are anticipated to register for this event. They have been receiving lots of requests for housing and/or boats to stay on during the event – so if have some extra rooms or can loan your boat for people to stay on, please contact cucci@rochester.rr.com .

Regarding facilities, I am pleased to report that our Club house painting project has been completed. Our new and improved harbor entrance bubbler system is back in service. The new safety ladders for the basin have arrived and installation will begin shortly. The plans to install fans and lighting in the Burgee Bar have been approved and their installation will be completed soon.  Thanks and kudos to Bud Webb, Mike Ebertz, Pat Basset and Miles Bliss, for keeping all of these projects on track.

Our 2011 budgeting and planning process will begin in August. We are approaching this a little differently this year. We are asking our committee chairs to consider how their budget requests will enhance member value. We are also asking that committees submit their calendars so that the 2011 Club Master calendar be developed and approved along with the budget.

Come on down, bring family and friends and enjoy our beautiful Club, boats, pool, kayaks and tennis courts during this fantastic summer season. Chef George has created a new menu and I highly recommend the Lobster Mac & Cheese! You might also consider trying the new “Sliders” – I thought they were great. Susie and I look forward to seeing you soon.
