Opti Race Team Concept: an “advanced” racing program for 6+ sailors to start a true Regional Optimist Travel Racing Team. The idea is to take a “first step” in raising the bar of our sailors to reach the Optimist National Team.

Goals:
Improvement of racing skills. Mastery of Opti Fleet racing skills and tactics. Fun and learning. Life experiences- make friends nation and world wide through road trips and working as a team.
Requirements:
- Desire and motivation to give 100%
- Minimum age 9- max 15.
- Must complete application and be approved by Jon Faudree
- Membership in Optimist Dinghy Class and US SAILING.
Curriculum:
Teamwork, racing and boat handling drills, sportsmanship, rules, protests, race strategy/tactics.
Boats:
privately owned Optimist Dinghies only.
Trailers:
6 boat RYC trailer.Red inflatable (coach boat) trailer- 2 more Optis on topThis configuration would need 2 tow vehicles, 8 sailors, 1 coach, and 2 parents.
Green Fleet Concept:
Provide a highly supportive and encouraging environment to introduce optimist sailors to fleet racing, allowing them to gain confidence while improving their skills. Keep it fun!
Goals:
To gain an understanding of Optimist fleet racing skills and tactics in a very supportive and encouraging environment. The beginning racers will learn boat handling skills and gain confidence as they spend time on the water. The team will have fun and make friends while learning as a team and traveling to the Wednesday interclub regional fun regattas.
Requirements:
- Desire to learn about Optimist racing
- Minimum age 9 years; max 15 years old.
- Must have their own Optimist or be currently registered for LTR class through RYC to participate.
It is recommended that the sailor participates in the earliest LTR class beginning June 22. After that, they can continue with an additional LRT class or if they own their own optimist, they can sign up for the Green Fleet Race Team and continue sailing. If it is not possible to take the first LTR class, they can start in the Green Fleet Race Team and take the LTR class later in the summer.
There may be an opportunity for non- boat owners to participate in the Green Fleet Race Team if an RYC optimist is available. Please call the Youth Sailing office at 324-5511x13. |
